Suicide—Are You At Risk?
You may think that people attempt suicide “out of the blue.” There are a number of factors that may lead someone to contemplate or attempt suicide; just a few of the more common risk factors may include:
- a mental disorder such as depression
- a substance abuse problem
- a family history of suicide
- past suicide attempts
- access to a firearm
- strong feelings of hopelessness and isolation
- relationship difficulties
Because suicide is a complex behavior with no identifiable "single" cause, it’s important to be aware of your risk and confide often in a close family member or friend. If you have thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself, visit (insert URL) or call (insert 800#) anytime of day or night. The EAP is there to help you before your problems escalate to feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.
